When it comes to intentionally creating a happy, successful life, it’s so important to learn from smart, positive people who are living (or have lived) that life themselves.

I came across this 1950 recording made by Earl Nightingale, often considered the pioneer of the personal improvement movement.

He speaks in clear, engaging and intelligent detail of both his grounded definition of what success is and how to bring it to our lives.

I hope you find his insights truly valuable.

A Great Life Requires

Intentional Habits

It’s not enough to just want a great life.

It’s a decision to focus what we do each day on building the experience of life we want.

The issue is…..we all are designed to create habits.

Some are very helpful.

And some… they aren’t necessarily working for us.

(Some can downright mess us up, right?)

But We Get To Fix That

One of the most important Tools to add to your Intentional Living Toolbox is the power to intentionally create new habits that drive your unconscious actions towards the experience of life you want.

Enter B.J. Fogg

Stanford Professor, Behavioral Scientist and Author, B. J. Fogg, has spent years working to understand how we can intentionally create new habits that truly help us change our lives for the better.

Fogg’s methods are deceivingly simple. They remove “will power” from the process, and make installing new habits easy, based upon a cornerstone of Tiny.

Often that can mean really tiny, so we start embedding the new behavior in a very small, bit sized way, steering clear of anxiety and self-doubt.

I’ve found his work so powerful I’ve incorporated his methods into The Power Of Intentional Living Membership journey.

His techniques give us a very adaptable, powerful way to assure new life choices turn into a lasting reality change. Ie. truly Stick.

Get An Edge On Changing Life For The Better

If you’d like to get a jump start on one of the powerful tools you’ll learn within the TPIL Membership, I have a link to his book below.

It’s offered in whatever way you soak up knowledge best:

Physical print, digital (kindle) or the Audible version (which BJ Fogg reads and adds additional background not found in the print additions).

Just choose the one that fits you best and I bet you’ll find this journey very worthwhile.

Enjoy this truly breakthrough method, based upon years of solid behavioral research, and a lot of real life testing and refinement. (thanks to over 40,000 people so far!)

Start having fun intentionally adding one consistent, positive daily experience into your life!

One that will make your life, your business or your relationships work better and better every day.

Because You were born to have a Vibrant, Connected, Happy life.

(Really!)

Isn’t it time to take charge of the internal software and start telling it to create the experience of life you’ve chosen, instead of the one being randomly dished out when you don’t?

You can check out B.J. Foggs wonderful book “Tiny Habits” below.

Cheers,

Paul

PS: It would be awesome to hear about your experiences when you put what you’ve learned in play in your life.

“Never let the things you want,
make you forget the things you have.”
Anonymous

When you and I are out there capturing our little slices of life, it’s easy for us to forget how much fun we have had.

That’s why we make such an effort to bring home a special object, or take photos that we can put around our home so the memory doesn’t fade away.

But one of our natural tools is our ability to tune out unchanged things around us.

Our mind does this to keep it’s energy directed toward where the “priorities” are, according to our circumstances and our sense of urgency.

Like a camera that can make the focal point sharp and the background blurred, that’s what our mind does when it allocates attention energy within our system.

The positive result is we can usually power through working on what is new or critical with enough energy to get the task done.

The consequence is that with little energy focused on those “blurred” parts of life, we can easily lose appreciation for the untapped value they can provide us in daily life.

Bringing The Blurred To Focus

Since we can consciously refocus where we want our attention to be, we can also quickly re-energize any aspect of our experience that has been sub-consciously dimmed.

And that means we can put fun and excitement back into our lives on demand, immediately.

And here’s just one silly, fun and easy way to do it!

Create Your Own “Appreciation Tour”

Here’s One Quick Example:

Many of us have pictures, art, plants and other decorations around our homes that we enthusiastically acquired at different times in our personal evolution.

But if you’re like me, over time we get focused on the immediate and these objects become part of the “blur zone” we no longer see.

And yet, every one of these items is infused with a story waiting to be re-told, re-experienced and re-appreciated.

That’s why we brought them into our experience of Home.

It’s time to unlock those gifts!

Are You Ready To Have Some No Cost Fun?

Ok! In the next week or so, try this:

If you live with others, (kids, family, etc.) tell them you’re going to do something special on ……night and you’d like them to be there for your “Appreciation Tour.”

Or,

If you have a close friend you like to share things with, invite them over to your “Appreciation Tour” for a drink and snacks.

Or,

If you just need a boost, do this solo. It will still be fun!

The Rigorous Three Step Process (only kidding about the rigorous part.)

1.) Pick a day and time, put it in your calendar, so the time is secured.

You could do this as a fifteen minute kick off to an evening of fun or a theme for the evening.

Whatever works to intentionally make this fun happen.

2.) Set The Stage.

Here’s the great part. It’s likely you already have everything you need, except maybe drinks and snacks.

3.) With those handled, here’s all you do during “The Appreciation Tour”:

Grab a glass of your favorite beverage, (wine, beer, sparkling cider…) to connect a celebration mood to what you’re about to do.

If you can, put the beverage in a fancy or fun glass, because this is a special occasion. You could even dress up, or throw on some jewelry, or your best Tuxedo T-shirt, to really raise the fun level. Go on, cut loose and have fun with this! Make it a hoot.

Now that you’re ready,

The Appreciation Tour Begins!

Start in an area of your home that has just a few Memory pieces in it. (avoiding choice overwhelm).

Now walk up to the first item you see, take a sip, and remember the story of how that item came into your life. If you’re alone, do this silently or out loud, ’cause hey, it’s your memory, right?

If you’re with a partner, family, kids, girlfriend or boyfriend, tell them what you remember most from your perspective, about the life experience that item is connected to.

If several of you were there together when you acquired it, each can share the memory they associate with that trip or experience.

Then move on to the next item that has faded into the blur, sipping and sharing, and unlocking the memories contained in each.

You don’t have to do this for more than fifteen minutes or so.

It could be a fun kick off to doing other things, or a theme for an evening with good friends.

Whatever fits.

But in just that very short time, you’ll instantly re-focus your mind and heart on the fun, cool experiences of your life.

You’ll reconnect with the experience of who you are and the appreciation you have for the other people and places you’ve experienced in your life so far.

Who knows, you might just use your little “Appreciation Tour” to inspire your next great experience and adventure!

Give this simple tour a try and see how quickly you bring a smile to your face and a genuine feeling of Appreciation to your heart.

All in the comfort of your own home.

Never stop moving forward.

Cheers,

“Our Reaction To Life, Is Our Life”*

Video Version

It’s a mystery why we all grow up with the myth that things happen to us.

It creates so much personal hardship.

We learn to think “Because of this …., Therefore I’m ….” is how our life works.

And that because something created an influence, we are simply the helpless victim of it.

No choice. That’s just the way it works….

Not unless we say so.

The Missing Piece

You and I, as human beings, are story making machines.

And when we recognize that, we get the power to decide what story we make up, based on how it serves our needs.

We’re not talking about ignoring the Facts of a situation.

But what happens next is about how we interpret them.

The Machine That Never Sleeps

Our sub-conscious mind is the machine part of us that never sleeps.

And that’s a good thing, since it runs all our internal systems every moment of the day.

A Vacation for the sub-conscious, becomes a permanent vacation for us.

But as an organic machine, it runs programs, millions of them, constantly.

It tells our cells what to do, directs what gets healed and what doesn’t, tells us what is dangerous and what is fun….

And all of it is constantly influenced by what it has been taught as being true.

The Sponge Phase

From day one in our life, to about five years old or so, the sub-conscious mind is in massive data collection mode.

Like a sponge, it just soaks up input on everything it experiences though all of it’s senses.

It doesn’t have any idea what is good or bad, helpful or harmful, it just collects everything it can so when the conscious part of the brain begins to kick in, it has data to work with.

The Conscious Mind Comes On Line

If you’re a parent, you probably noticed that somewhere around five years old your children showed signs of being more self-aware.

How they looked started to become important. What other people thought about them began to matter much more.

In my own life, I had a nephew and niece who lived in a rural area. For the first four plus years their most comfortable state was naked, if it were at all warm enough. Out in their secluded yard, in the house, playing, dancing, whatever they were doing, that was most comfortable for them.

One day, when my nephew was about five, he and I went to a hidden stream that had places where the water created still pools in the rocks.

It was a popular place to swim and have fun with the neighbors.

Because he and his sister had learned that the general public was not as enlightened about the freedom of being in their natural state, he brought his bathing suit for the swim.

Normally he would just walk over to a flat area, drop his pants, put on his suit and head for the watering hole.

But this time he turned to me and said “Uncle Paul, will you hold up a towel so I can change?”

I smiled, and felt very honored that he trusted me to help him adjust to this new experience of himself.

Control The Tool, Control The Results

Once the conscious mind comes online, for the first time we get to choose how we interpret what we experience.

We wrestle with how the data that showed up in our reference library should be pieced together and what it means to us.

But only rarely, did anyone coach us that in every situation, there are: The Facts of what has happened, and The Story we make up about it.

We Get To Write The Story

Here’s an easy example.

You’re on the freeway minding your own business when a speeding car suddenly cuts across in front of you, and heads off down the road.

Immediately your sub-conscious mind goes into danger alert mode!

Fear leaps into your system, likely followed by anger for “that … guy”.

Your likely first thought?…You want to show them how wrong they are for endangering you.

And you want to teach them that lesson right now.

You Have A Choice To Make

What experience of life do you want right now?

The Facts: A vehicle cut in front of you. You were not harmed. They are gone.

The Story You Choose To Make Up About It:

Story A.) One that accelerates the anger response your Sub-conscious just automatically dished out.

Likely results: More anger eats you up, stressing your system, stealing your happiness. You create additional danger for yourself and everyone else on the road by chasing him and attempting to confront him. Since the other driver is likely in a hyper state, based upon his driving, the odds of anything but a much worse situation occurring are very high.

Or

Story B.) You take a deep breath to release the adrenaline rush, hope the person isn’t rushing to the aid of a loved one, and shift your thoughts to the cool things you’re going to do later today when you arrive at your destination.

Likely Results: Life Continues To Be Enjoyable (because you said so).

Learn To Live Intentionally

When you live intentionally, you decide what story to make up about the Facts.

Because you decide if your life will be happy or stressed. Only you.

You understand that life doesn’t happen to you. It happens through you.

You get to choose the interpretation that best improves your experience of life at every moment.

We were given a Conscious mind to allow us to oversee the reactionary, “I don’t know right from wrong,” Sub-conscious mind because it doesn’t know any better.

With every situation that you practice separating the Facts and then Choose The Story that improves your life, the faster you re-connect to the experience of life you have chosen to live.

Because this is your life, nobody else’s.

And your greatest gift, is your ability to consciously decide how your life will go everyday.

Uncover and use the gifts you were given to help you.

Used well, you’ll truly build a life you love being a part of, no matter what your instant reaction throws at you.

Take charge of your machine,

and Never stop moving forward.

Cheers,

Built into us is a dominant way we live our life…

And We Missed The Memo!

Know Yourself A Little Better
Take The Four Tendencies Quiz

Author Gretchen Rubin, well known for her upbeat, deep dive into “Happiness” in her book “The Happiness Project,” began to recognize an interesting pattern emerging in her research in the way each of us responds to life.

This triggered her next dive into our human tendencies and how some people seem to leverage them in very effective ways and other don’t.

Discovering, or should I say, recognizing this embedded trait in my own life was both an “Ouch!” and a “Wow, I can stop waisting time beating myself up,” kind of experience.

Removing Roadblocks

When I recognized how my tendency was directing my life, sometimes in ways that were not helping me, I suddenly realized I could now use that understanding to help me remove road blocks, instead of creating them.

And that was very cool.

It’s also why this insightful tool is one of many tools you get within The Power Of Intentional Living ILM paid membership program. There you begin by actually building your own personal “Owner’s Manual” to better guide your life decisions.

The more you uncover and use the unique c tools you’ve already been given to create the experience of life you want, the more fulfilled and successful your life becomes.

Her book has a lot of great examples of how each of the four tendencies play out in real life.

So don’t miss out on the valuable wisdom Rubin skillfully details in her book.

But wouldn’t it also be cool to know which of the four tendencies are most core to you, so you could immediately start projects using it to make work and life easier?

Take The Four Tendencies Quiz and quickly find out!

(I laughed when it nailed it for me!)

Plus, her research based assessment tool is Free!

Have fun learning more about how you were built…

and start using it to help you create

The Experience Of Life You Love!

Never stop moving forward.

Cheers,

We all want the secret to a happy life.

Here’s two peoples journey to help us find some answers.

Uncovering The Mysterious “Ikigai”

If you listened to the TED Talk I posted on “Ikigai” by Dan Buettner, you learned about his search for why some people live long, happy, highly active lives well into their 100 th birthdays or longer.

That’s why as a part of the Living Intentionally membership, you uncover the value you bring to each of it’s four elements, and use that knowledge to clarify and inspire a sense of purpose, or reason for being, in your daily life.

Because when we learn to intentionally create a life designed around using and contributing our natural strengths and purpose in the world, life wherever we live, becomes more energized, happier and more fulfilled, right where we are.

We also positively change the experience of everyone around us too.

The authors, Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles, set off on a journey to talk with, experience and record every clue they could find about this mysterious philosophy called “Ikigai.”

As the author’s tell you, “In Japanese “ikigai” is written by combining the character which means “life” with another which means “to be worthwhile.”

This book will take you on their journey to discover what creates a worthwhile life. It might also help you uncover new ideas to put to work in your daily life now.

I hope you enjoy it.

Remember to post your thoughts on our Facebook page:

(The Power Of Intentional Living) and share with us what had meaning to you.

Here’s the Amazon link to the book. It’s available both in print and in Audible version, narrated by Walter Dixon, a very pleasant speaker.

Never stop moving forward.

Cheers,

Even When They’re Not A Natural Fit.

The trick is to find an “Access Point” to do it anyway.

The Video Version

A powerful benefit of being clear on what talents we bring to life, is the ability to use those talents as “Access Points” to accomplish things we should do, but don’t like to.

The personal “Owner’s Manual” you create in The ILM is a powerful tool.

It helps you stay focused on where you’re likely to find the most fulfillment and add the most value to the world in daily life.

Still, we don’t want to use this knowledge as an excuse to simply not do things we should do, but don’t naturally like to do.

When we do, we often cheat ourselves of valuable growth and others of significant residual benefits.

Here’s an example of a creative trick (An Access Point) I used to take on a task I had no passion for doing, but turned into something I have fun doing.

What’s For Dinner?

My wife always took responsibility for planning and making meals.

But she works a much less flexible schedule than I do.

Even though I was never “into cooking,” it suddenly (finally!) dawned on me that it was crazy she was coming home from work around dinner time and then taking on making dinner!

So, one night I asked her: “How about I take over planning and making dinner for us from now on, starting tomorrow?”

After being momentarily stunned that I wanted to take this on, she almost instantly said ” Yes, that would be really great!”

Enter The Holy Crap Moment

Oops…now I was all in.

I knew what I was doing was the right thing, but how was I going to “get into” cooking from now on?

It seemed like a steep climb, so I immediately started looking at how I could leverage my strengths to create a way to “get into” it.

One of my strengths is “transforming something strong into something superb,”* and I’m very visually oriented. (*ref. the Strengths assessment tool used within the ILM)

So I thought, “What could I do to make creating meals fun for me, if I didn’t have an interest in making the actual food?”

My solution: Make every meal “look” beautiful.

I decided to make the appearance of every plated dish the focus, creating a visual composition for each meal, especially as I was learning healthy combinations and how to work with flavors…

And how to not turn fish and chicken into a rubber product!

So How’d It Go?

Now, almost two years later, I make our dinners at least five days a week, have removed the pressure of this necessity from my wonderful wife’s “To Do” list, and most importantly, made her feel more appreciated.

Plus, I get to surprise her every evening with a new, visually attractive (and most times good tasting) meal that connects with me creatively.

I even take on those “meal in a box” deliveries once in a while, to help expand my knowledge of spices and combinations, creating new possibilities.

To paraphrase Thomas Edison: “The moment you think you’ve exhausted all the possibilities, you haven’t.”

An Easy Method To Change Your Perspective

What are things in your life that you should do, but dodge, because you really don’t want to?

Here’s A Method You Can Use To More Quickly Make A Connection Between Something You “Should” do, And Something You Love To Do:

Four Simple Steps:

1.) Make Three Quick Columns On A Piece Of Paper (yup, draw two semi-straight lines down the paper to divide it into three sections.)

2.) Add These Titles To The Top Of Each Column:

Column #1: What I Should Do, But Don’t Want To

Column #2: My Most Powerful Strengths

Column #3: Ways To Connect Them

Don’t Add Anything To The Columns Yet.

Flip the paper and make the Column #1 (Should Do) list on the back of the paper so you can just flow them out to see them.

Now Pick The One Item That Will Be Easiest For You To Accomplish. (This is not an Ironman Challenge, it’s a Get Your Feet Wet and Have Some Fun Exercise to get you familiar with the process. So start with small weights and work up.)

3.) In Column #2: List Your Most Powerful Strengths. (If you’re in the ILM, use the Strengths section in your “Personal Owner’s Manual™” If not (yet), write down what you feel from experience are your most dominant strengths. The talents you seem to use most often when you’re doing something you love to do.

4.) In Column #3, “blue sky” fun and/or wacky ways you can link the task in Column #1 to one or more of the Strengths you listed to accomplish the task.

5). Start doing the task in Column #1 using those strengths!

That’s what I did in my “Holy Crap” moment and you can do the same.

And have Fun with it! The more silliness your create as you do it, the better.

The mission is to make that combination uniquely interesting to you.

And now you have another cool Tool in your “Intentional Living Tool Box™.”

“Living Intentionally means you’ve become clear about the experience of life you want, and are actively making it so.”

By learning to quickly shift focus from seeing a barrier, to finding an “Access Point™,“ you intentionally shift your experience from a feeling of Weakness to an Experience of Control.

And learning to kick that burden to the curb using something already strong within you, gives you more power to live more intentionally.

Because A Happy Life Happens Intentionally™

and you get to make it so everyday.

Cheers,

PS: If you’re not already in The IL M, we open registration just a few times a year.

“We Have A Choice With The Words We Use,
To Create The Life We Live.

Choose wisely.”
Will Bowen
(Author: A Complaint Free World)

A few years ago in a small American town, a movement started that has now spread around the world.

The incredible part is that it calls us to give up something that is so normal in our daily lives, that we do it unconsciously.

It’s woven into the fabric of most conversations we have everyday.

But it’s also an insidious reason why so many of us stay trapped feeling life is not much fun anymore.

The Unconscious Art Of Complaining

You and I know that complaining is not an admiral trait.

But this habit is so embedded into our culture, we almost never consider the personally damaging effect it’s having on our personal level of happiness, or on everyone experiencing us.

Hiding In Plain Sight

I intentionally focused on looking for the positive in life a long time ago for a very practical reason:

It’s a catalyst for bringing more positive results into being.

Dwelling on the negative interfered with the speed of creating successful results and prevented others from becoming enrolled in the mission to help create that success.

So, naively, I thought I was pretty low on the complaint scale.

But here’s the insidious part for me.

Because I knew how damaging complaining was to others, I didn’t often complain in public.

But when I was alone with me, myself and I, or worse, sometimes with my amazing wife, an emotionally frustrating moment would come up, and out would come a complaint.

It’s Really No Big Deal

I never really thought it mattered. Everybody does it, and it’s just a normal part of being human.

In fact, it’s probably good for me to get that frustration out that way. It makes me feel I’ve told the universe I’m upset and I’m posting my complaint. In fact, I’m actually helping change the world by letting it know what’s wrong so somebody else will fix it soon.

But The Universe Decided To Throw Me A Bone

I came across Will Bowen’s book “A Complaint Free World” and it sounded like a crazy idea, but interesting.

Since I’m always on the hunt for proven tools and resources for my readers, the curiosity got me started.

And soon I realized how damaging complaints, sarcasm and gossip were to living an energized, happy and productive life.

The “experience of life I want and am actively making it so.”

Will Bowen And His Radical Idea

This crazy idea of creating a Complaint Free World, started by Will Bowen, asks you to do something that seems on the surface, relatively easy (or so I thought):

Remove complaints, sarcasm and gossip from all your conversations for just 21 days.

If for no other reason but to give yourself a good laugh at yourself, take this on and see how “easy” this really is.

The Complaining Norm

When you start to consciously pay attention to how often this triad of downers show up in what you say out loud each day, it will likely stun you.

It’s just so “Normal.”

In fact, I began to realize that integrating a complaint or sarcasm into what I said, in often subtle ways, happened much more than I ever imagined.

For me anyway, it was a form of personal entertainment. I never thought of it as being a “complaint” or paid attention to how I felt immediately after saying it.

But it was.

And the more I recognized it for what it was, the more I started to notice how I felt after saying it.

Passing On The Poison

What I didn’t realize, until I began this fun experiment, was the suppressive effect I was experiencing from the underlying frustration created (and perpetuated) behind it.

Or that I was actually passing on that frustration to every person I expressed it in front of. And that included my most personal relationship. The one with my wife. Ouch.

Essentially, I was passing on the poison.

21 Days To An Experience Most Never Know

So I began the 21 day challenge.

Simply, put the purple band you can get from his website (very inexpensively and embossed with A Complaint Free World.org, or use your own version.

Put it on one wrist to begin.

Anytime you say a complaint, sarcastic remark or gossip, move the band to the other wrist.

Start the 21 day count again.

The Magic Of Living A Complaint Free Life

Let me start by saying I’m still on this journey to 21 days (the time it generally takes to establish a new habit in your subconscious).

But the more I experience the lightening effect that happens each time I don’t energize the triad of downers, the more committed I am to making this my new normal state of being.

And the closer I get to making 21 days in this zone, the more excited I am about the experience of the day to come.

It’s become a game to see where I will catch myself about to…… and then treat myself to the experience I get immediately from not going there.

It’s like an energizing shot of positive I get to self administer. No caffeine required.

“People Don’t Change…”

Maybe,

But You Change Others Experience Of Life Everyday.

If you want proof that what you say has an immediate effect on others, try this experiment:

First, in your next conversation, begin paying close attention to how people are reacting to you during the moments you’ve Not added a complaint, criticism, or sarcastic comment to the conversation.

Then, intentionally make one single complaint, and watch the expression on their face.

You just changed their experience of the moment… and brought it down a notch.

The power you have to effect others is real.

Use Your Presence To Raise The Bar Of Happiness

By purging complaints from your experience of life, watch how the people around you enjoy being around you more and like working with you more often.

Underneath the noise around us, we all hope a happy life will come to us.

But the world doesn’t anoint us with happiness, it gives us something much more valuable:

The ability to personally create it and reflect that feeling into the experience of others.

Cue The (wrist) Band. Game On!

I’m ask that you to be one of those crazy individuals that takes this on. Why?

Because if you remove even a small percentage of complaints from the world, you’ll be healing the world a little bit more.

What do you have to lose, except the time it takes to move the band from one wrist to another?

And maybe a bit of ego, as you move it more often at first, than you expected.
